Botany is the scientific study of plants and fungi. Plants are a vital component of the Biosphere and are directly responsible for the conditions required for life on earth. Plants life can be studied from different perspectives i.e., from the genetic, molecular and biochemical level through different cell organelles, tissues, organs, individuals, populations, and plant communities. Plants are also the mainstay of human and animal diets and provide medicines, gum, timber, paper, clothing, shelter, and energy.
The Department of Botany of this college, since 2019, caters the human resource requirements for teaching and research in the fields of education, agriculture, environmental NGOs, pharmaceutics and other industries. Our goal is to provide students with quality classrooms experience with opportunities for research in the laboratory, greenhouses and field, so that they acquire the biological literary, critical thinking skills necessary for successful carrier in education, industry, and government, to continue their education in graduate and Professional Schools.
The Department is known by the research of its faculty members in the areas of Tissue Culture, Proteomics, Genomics, Molecular Genetics, Environmental Biotechnology, Palaeobotany and Palynology, Mycology and Fungal Systematics, Microbiology, Stress Physiology and Ecology. The Department has a research laboratory with an elaborate research programme involving national and international collaborations with academia, industry and government organizations.
